Another sickness is upon us

Our first full week without Daddy sure was a full one... and one might say long.

Tuesday was Kiersten's first outing alone with both girls which we mentioned in last week's post. They spent the rest of the day at home resting and getting dinner ready. They were alone all day as Kiersten's parents were very busy with various activities which kept them out of the house.
Here we go!

Wednesday in the afternoon we left for Maryland to celebrate real Thanksgiving at Kiersten's brother's house. Traffic as can be expected in this area at this time of year was pretty slow. We met the brother's family in Annapolis for dinner at Ram's Head Tavern. Good food, good company. After dinner we drove to their house and spent the night.
Kiersten made Mackenzie a traveling tray for the car. Thank you Dollar Tree and Pinterest. In total cost her $3.

In the morning the cousins ran around, joyfully playing while the adults got breakfast ready. Kiersten was off the hook since Finley had kept her up the better part of the night. After breakfast the women and kids stayed inside and watched the parade while the men did yard work. We all helped make dinner and since we'd done the big dinner last week we kept this one low key and casual. Easy potato dishes, pre-made rolls and a turkey breast not a whole bird. And only two pies this time, not four. Scott on the other hand in Asuncion had TWO Thanksgiving dinners; one with church members and one with co-workers. He played football in the morning, made a pie and another dish and ate a lot of food. He went home very tired that evening. As did Kiersten and the girls.
When she wasn't being held we had her in this swing. Not sure what her opinion on it was.

Black Friday is usually a great day to stay inside or go out into nature to avoid the crazy shoppers and parking lots. This year however while the girls were napping, Kiersten went to the stores to return things. It was nice to leave with a full car and return with an empty one and a heavier wallet. The only shopping we did do was online for a personal training continuing education course to keep Kiersten's certificate current.

Saturday was rainy in Virginia but sunny in Asuncion. Scott had a productive day cleaning the pool and doing other chores. Mackenzie started to sound and look sick so Kiersten spent the day inside again trying to keep her away from Finley. It was a rough night for Mackenzie who kept Kiersten up half the night and requested Mommy sleep in the armchair in her room. Sunday Mackenzie looked and sounded worse and indeed had a cold. The girls all stayed home from church and Mackenzie napped for 4.5 hours which did her a lot of good.
How we spent most of Saturday and Sunday.

And here we are on Monday. Mackenzie is feeling and sounding better but still has a nasty cough. She slept much better last night but ironically Finley kept Kiersten up a good part of the night. This mothering thing can be tough sometimes, especially at night. After spending the last two days watching a lot of tv, Kiersten was hoping to play with her oldest and engage her imagination a little more today but... after the rough night Finley is needing a little more attention and Kiersten is tired so here we currently sit watching a Mickey Mouse Christmas.

The Mackenzie Update:

  • Mackenzie's beloved pacifier, bear-bear, died this week. And it couldn't have happened at a worse time, right as she was getting sick. Friday night as she was going down to bed she told Kiersten, "Bear-bear broken." She had bitten through it and we'd told her if that happened it was time to say good-bye. In the morning she got to throw it in the trash. She has slept fine without it but every night since she either asks for bear-bear or cries out for it. Luckily she hasn't tried to take her sister's bear-bear for herself...yet.
  • We've been working on helping with chores. This week she helped Mommy load the dishwasher with the utensils. She also helps with cleaning up the tub after bath and can sort of fold clothes. Still working on that one.
  • She is very aware of her sister. And she still loves to give her kisses. It's so sweet.
  • And the pooping in the potty continues. She knows if she poops in the potty she gets 2 M&Ms which she calls 'em-ems'.

The Finley Report:

  • On Friday the 23, she turned one month old! Which also means she was originally due to enter this world this week. Weird.
  • In the past month this little girl has shown us how strong she is. Eight days in the NICU, breastfeeding exclusively ahead of schedule, gaining weight and growing at a good rate.
  • She seems to suffer from a gassy belly so laying on her belly helps her feel better. Doctor's say you shouldn't put a baby to sleep on their stomach so she has taken a few naps (and some hours last night) asleep on Mommy's chest.
  • She is spending more time each day awake during the day and going for longer stretches asleep each night. She also seems to be in another growth spurt because the last few days she eats every 2-2.5 hours.
We are in the final week of November and then the Christmas season officially begins. And without Scott around we aren't taking as many pictures as usual and we are especially lacking in pictures of Finley something we hope to remedy this week. We want her to know how special she is to us and not just her sister as a baby.  Have a great week and we'll see you next week.
