Our little Miss Mackenzie celebrated her fourth birthday on Wednesday, June 10. She has been talking about her birthday for weeks and kept saying, "I'm so exciting for my birthday!" When asked what she wanted for her birthday she said, "A watch. A phone. A computer. Elsa and Anna _________." Well she did get a lot of Frozen paraphernalia and a watch is coming but mail is slow. In fact most of her presents arrived the day before her birthday.
She had also requested a rainbow birthday cake. Let it be known that Kiersten dislikes baking cakes. They are so time consuming and she doesn't really like cake. Plus it was just going to be the 4 of us. But! It's a birthday for her child and a quarantine birthday at that so Kiersten spent basically all day Tuesday in the kitchen baking the biggest cake of her life; six layers all different colors and only 2 cake pans. All in all it ended up being a good thing. This allowed each layer to cool completely and it gave Kiersten something to do other than... nothing all day. The fun part is the assembly. Once all the layers were placed she stuck in a kebab skewer for good measure to finish frosting the next day. Best buttercream frosting ever! Almond extract for the win!
Nanima, our wonderful nanny, came in the morning to play with the birthday girl all day. Grandma Jackson treated Mackenzie to several birthday stories on Marco Polo videos and Grandma Hammond sang her happy birthday. During her school call her teachers and classmates sang to her in English and Spanish and it was wonderfully horrible because virtual singing just doesn't work. One of the little girls was very sad because she couldn't get any cake to which Mackenzie said to me, "I don't want to share my cake with them." !! She hadn't even seen it yet! Then she did a scavenger hunt to find her presents. She got clothes, books, Frozen 2 toys, art set and an Elsa dress that she hasn't taken off since.
Then we called all the Jacksons so they could celebrate with us then the Hammonds. After the calls we ate her dinner of choice, McDonald's burger cheese and watched a movie, Ratatouille. Then it was cake time! She was so excited and agog at the size of it. We sang, she blew out all the candles and we all ate cake. (After she went to bed we cut it up and distributed it to neighbors and friends even though she still claimed she didn't want to share it. She was none the wiser.)
Now that Mackenzie is 4 a few things are changing. First she now gets 2 vitamins at breakfast instead of 1 and this is what she's most excited about. She had been telling EVERYONE! Second, her bedtime is now at 8 instead of 7:30. This is probably a bigger adjustment for Mom and Dad than for her since we now get to entertain her for an extra hour after Finley goes to bed. However the last 2 days she's let us sleep in until 7:30 so we'll take that exchange.
Our Mackenzie is just the sweetest girl. She loves her family fiercely and is a great protector of her sister. She has grown so much this year. Learned how to ride a scooter, write her name, numbers and letters, say her prayers, crack an egg, make a bed, put on her shoes and get dressed all by herself. She is a budding artist and seems happiest creating new worlds on paper with her crayons, markers and paints. She loves to dance and sing and make up little songs. She keeps us on our toes and pushes our limits but we love her with all our hearts. She is our first born and lovely girl. Here's to many more!
