On January 2, Kiersten came down with a stomach bug which took her out of commission all day Tuesday. Scott stayed home from work to take care of Mackenzie so Kiersten could rest up. By Wednesday she was feeling loads better.
The weather this week has been pretty cool. We got some rain early in the week which kept the temps low which has been really nice. It still gets hot but it's not as muggy or humid as it could be so we still went swimming almost every day. We sure do love our little pool!

Thursday nights are our new family game nights. Kiersten consented to playing Scrabble. See 'bacon' on the board there? Yeah, that was her!
On Friday K&M went back to El Parque Seminario for a walk and to play on the play ground. She loves those slides! Then we came home and went swimming and then Mackenzie napped for 3 hours! It was awesome! After Scott got home and she woke up, we went to the really nice mall (El Paseo la Galaria) to buy Mackenzie some new shoes and dinner. We ate at Johnny B. Good which was fun. All their menu items have a famous musician's name in the title. They had a dessert called "The Jackson 5" so we had to get it for our Jackson 3. It was delicious!
The mall still had their Christmas decorations up.
Now she's riding in a hot air balloon!
Looking out over the trees at the Mall.
Enjoying her dinner at Johnny B. Good.
The Jackson 5 was a flight of different puddings.
Clearly it was a huge hit with this Jackson family.
On Saturday we went back to the park as a family. Scott ran a few miles while Kiersten walked, carrying Mackenzie on her back in the baby carrier. We all met up at the park for her to play for about 20 minutes. We walked home and jumped in the pool for about 45 minutes and then Mackenzie took another 3 hour nap! Yes!! During that entire time Scott cleaned the pool and got some help from our neighbor and his pressure washer to clean both cars and our garage. Everything looks stupendous. Later that afternoon we drove down to the Coastanera which is the river coast and walked a bit. It was hot but there was a very constant, strong breeze which definitely helped.
She went down the big twisty slide this time and loved it!
See the winding blowing our hair? It was a fun adventure.
We got some more presents this week. Thanks Great-Aunt Suzanne!
This morning Kiersten had her first tutor lesson with one of the women in our Ward. She's originally from Costa Rica but speaks perfect English (she studied at BYU and BYU-I). It was great and Mackenzie had fun too. Then this evening we joined two other American Mormon families for an FHE pool party/dinner. It was great and Mackenzie loved running around with the kids and being the center of attention.
We have nothing to report for our Misadventures in Baking section so we'll move right along to Quirks of Paraguay.
Quirks of Paraguay:
- Cover songs. We've noticed that most of the music they play in public spaces like the grocery store or the malls are American songs and they are usually cover songs. Normally we both don't care for covers but the ones they play here are all good! And it's usually a cover of a pop song that has been slowed down. Bravo Paraguay, bravo.
- Insects. On our walk one day we realized if you closed your eyes and listened to the sounds of the insects around you, you'd swear you were in Virginia in the summer. The cicadas and crickets all sound the same. It's a very comforting sound.
The Mackenzie Update:
- Her jump in vocabulary continues to amaze us. Sometimes she just says stuff that we later realize is a word and not a babble and other times we ask her to repeat us and she does a decent job of it. This week some of her new words include "home", "beep-beep" (indicating a car), "cheese", and "I love you".
- She survived the last hour of Nursery solo this week. She cried for about 30 seconds until she was distracted by something and never looked back. Hoping we can get her to do this for the entire two hours very soon. Fingers crossed!
- She can snap...with her tongue. She's been able to make a tongue clicking noise for a while but we've just now realized that occasionally she'll wiggle her fingers and her hand in a snapping type motion and also click her tongue at the same time to make it look and sound like she is snapping. She is such a smartie!
That's the brief run down from our week. We hope you all have had as good a week as us. Happy New Year! And we'll see you next week.
