Happy New Year! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Welcome to 2018! My goodness how the time does fly. It was a spectacular year for our little family and we are almost sad to say goodbye to 2017 but are excited to see what 2018 has in store for us. Let's begin the blog with a quick rundown of our week and then we have something special for you all.

After Tuesday it was a pretty normal week. Scott worked and Kiersten and Mackenzie played at home and ran various errands. On Saturday, Scott and Kiersten went on a date. A classic dinner and a movie date. We went to the mall for dinner at a nice-ish sit-down restaurant and then we saw Star Wars! It was our first movie in Asuncion and it was a success. The movie had English audio and Spanish subtitles. The theater was in the mall and when the movie let out at 10:15 we walked back out into the food court and it was packed! No vacant tables in sight! It was in fact more crowded at 10:15 at night than it had been at 6:45 when we came to eat dinner. We later discovered it was busy because it was New Years weekend. That makes sense.

Mackenzie helping Mommy make Peppermint Bark this week.

Taking a break during one of our walks.

Enjoying a fresh peach.

Found this horse and buggy on another walk during the week.

Playing on a new playground at El Parque Seminario.

And she's a fan of the slide!

Date Night! Dinner at Morado: Slow Food. Yes that is the name of it.

Gnocchi for Scott, giant salad for Kiersten.

It was a 3D showing but it had the best start time of any other theater we looked at.

New Years Eve was a very low-key affair for us. We made a delicious pork roast as it is customary in Paraguay to eat pork on New Year. After Mackenzie went to bed at 7 we cleaned up dinner, played a few new games we got for Christmas, watched an episode of 'Designated Survivor' and tried to find a live feed of a New Year celebration in our time zone. After hunting on YouTube for almost an hour we heard fireworks going off and realized it was midnight. Happy New Year! We went outside to see some of the fireworks but it was overcast so we went inside to bed which was difficult because of all the fireworks going off in our area.
We rang in the new year with this delicious Black Forest cake created by Scott.

Today is January 1, 2018. Wow! It was overcast and rainy all day so we took the time to take down Christmas and clean up the house. We went out for a drive in the afternoon to the Southern part of Asuncion and found some really nice, big houses.
We found this really cool globe on our drive.

And big houses like this one...

And this one with a serious roof.

And we passed by Cerro Lambare which we visited a few months ago.

Dropped off some baked goods at our neighbors and Mackenzie met
their dog, Zoe. They got along very well.

Now for the main event! We've done this in years past so it's nothing new, our Top Five from the year starting with number 5.

5 - This blog! This is the first time since we started this blog in 2011 that we wrote in it regularly and actually made it a priority. We are so glad we did because we have recorded some great memories already and have helped to stay in contact with so many people back home because of it. We hope to keep this going in 2018 as well.
Starting in the top left:
K&M visited Michigan for a friend's baby shower
S&K ran a 1/2 marathon
Snow! finally in March
Visiting grandparents in Utah
Sixth Anniversary
Mackenzie's first birthday
Our big move
Living in Asuncion
Merry Christmas from the Jacksons!

4 - Scott and Kiersten turned 30 in 2017. It was big. We traveled around the Sun thirty times and left our 20's behind. We both celebrated our birthdays in Paraguay and ate at T.G.I. Friday's for dinner.

3 - In March Scott and Kiersten ran a sub 2 hour half marathon in DC. It has been a goal of ours to run the 13.1 mile race in under 2 hours and this past Spring we did it together. It was, ironically, the coldest weekend in the District and our biggest race to date which made the accomplishment all the more sweet.
It was a chilly day!

2 - Mackenzie turned 1! In June we celebrated the birth of our little girl with family and friends in Reston, VA. It was such a fun day. Then that night, Scott and Kiersten attended an O.A.R./Train concert at Jiffy Lube Live. Yeah, it was a great day.
After her first taste of chocolate, she was hooked.

1 - We moved to Paraguay! It's no surprise to see that our number 1 event from 2017 was our big move overseas. In July we packed up all our belongings, shipped our car and boarded several planes to take us to our new home. So far we have really enjoyed living here. The people are wonderfully friendly, the culture unique and the climate is HOT but we are managing everything swimmingly.
At the airport very early on July 20, 2017.

Looking forward to 2018 some of our resolutions include:

  • Learning Spanish. Like really learn it.
  • Read the scriptures daily and read more in general.
  • Finish started projects - this is for Kiersten....
  • Get more sleep!
Thank you for being with us last year and for supporting us in our blog. We love and miss all of our loved ones at home and around the world. We give thanks to our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ for the blessings and miracles we've witnessed in our lives. We know They have a plan for us and can't wait to see what unfolds in this new year.

Happy New Year! We'll see you next week!
